Reflections from our reunion committee
(continued from the Home page)
The 50th Reunion of the Class of 1963 left us with many memories. The fish fry on Friday evening at the Westfield Golf Course was fantastic, with 84 attending this event. Many had the opportunity to join fellow classmates and reminisce about our high school years. Saturday evening was our main event and was held at the American Legion Event Center, with 122 attending. The evening began with remembering our classmates who are no longer with us. Their names were announced and a candle was lit as their high school photo appeared on the screen. After a wonderful dinner, another PowerPoint was presented with the theme of "Mission Impossible," which brought back memories of things that were good enough for us when we were kids but are not so good today. For example, we had black and white TV—snowy half the time, with rabbit ears, but we enjoyed it. |

We had I Love Lucy; the Honeymooners; the Lone Ranger; Annette Funicello and the Mouseketeers; and the list goes on. Our sack lunch was just fine in that brown paper bag. Today they have ice-packed coolers. We played many games together and learned to get by with what we had—playing ball, kick the can, wearing high top tennis shoes . . . but today the kids need special tennis shoes and have all these electronic gadgets to keep them occupied. We never had to worry about raw chicken and eggs or getting food poisoning. E-coli? Never heard of it. We also got to swim in the lake or Latsch Beach and not in a chlorine-filled pool. We didn't have to pay to go swimming. We prayed in school, said the pledge of allegiance, and sang patriotic songs. This presentation brought back a lot of memories and we all are very proud of what we had back then.
We finished the evening with a third PowerPoint taking us back to how Winona used to be. We began where the boys hung out—many places across the river—and they sure did not forget about any of them! Many places that were highlights of our growing up years are no longer here: Latsch Island, Hot Fish Shop, SS Kresge, Woolworths, McVeys, the Skyview drive-in, and the list goes on. Ironically, we still have Sammy's, Zesto, Lakeview Drive Inn, the band shell and Garvin Heights.
A lot of memories were shared. Tears of joy as we parted. All in all, this had to be the best reunion ever. Thank you, classmates.
Your Class Reunion Committee,
Al, Jerry F, Jerry D, Butch, Carol, Betsey, Irene
